The William Stevens House, an outstanding saltbox-style residence on the National Historic Registry, dates back to the late 17th century (approx. 1678) and is one of Clinton's oldest surviving buildings. The English Bank barn is on the CT Historic Barns Registry. This beautiful home is in a rural-suburban area in northern Clinton, on the west side of Cow Hill Road, just north of Airline Road. The house faces south and is set back from the street by a low stone wall. It is a 2½-story wood-frame structure that is three bays wide with a side-gable roof and a large central chimney.

Unlike most houses from this time, which had a winding staircase at the front entry, this house had a chimney positioned further back. The staircase rises in a dogleg and straight up to the left of the chimney. In typical houses of this period, the fireplaces are on the sides of the chimney in the two front rooms. However, in this house, the fireplaces are located at the front because of the chimney’s position.

The date of construction is unclear, but it is usually linked to William Stevens (1630-1703), which suggests it was built in the late 17th or early 18th century. Stevens was born in England and was the son of John Stevens, an early settler of the New Haven Colony. The house remained in the Stevens family for nine generations until the 1970s. Experts believe the house started as a small one-room home on farmland owned by Stevens and was gradually expanded, leading to its unique design.
